Graduates with competencies and leadership sought by employers
KUANTAN, 17 March 2022 - Graduates with high competencies by mastering various languages, have self-confidence, can communicate well and have the ability to operate high-tech equipment have the advantage of gaining a place in the job market.
According to UMP Pro-Chancellor, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri (Dr.) Abi Musa Asa’ari Mohamed Nor, graduates must have leadership qualities in order to produce people who are confident, wise in planning and able to encourage others to do something to achieve the objectives set.
“I am confident that the platform available at Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) has been successfully utilised in educating and developing students as well as honing leadership talents among graduates,” he said during his speech at the 1st Session of the 17th UMP Convocation Ceremony today.
“In these very challenging economic conditions, reliance on the local job market alone is not enough,” he said.
He called for UMP to produce graduates of a global nature.
In fact, he said, UMP needs to formulate new strategies and initiatives to ensure that UMP graduates successfully penetrate the international job market.
In addition, the university needs to intensify efforts to increase the skills and competencies of graduates so that UMP graduates are accepted by employers either from multinational companies based in Malaysia or abroad.
He was present to confer the degrees and awards of excellence to a total of 199 recipients of master’s and doctoral degrees and 14 awards and prizes of excellence in the first session of the Convocation Ceremony.
Also present were the Chairman of the UMP Board of Directors, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman, UMP Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Ts. Dr. Yuserrie Zainuddin and university management.
During the ceremony, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri (Dr.) Abi Musa Asa’ari presented the excellence award to Nur Khairiyah Hibatullah Md Rosley and William Mah Wey Lian who were awarded the Royal Education Award (Pingat Jaya Cemerlang), Michelle Ho Siaw Wei for the Chancellor’s Award and Chong Jia Xin for the Pro-Chancellor Award.
Meanwhile, Rashwini Balasuntram received the Vice-Chancellor Award, Nur Harizah Mohd Nadzmi and Chew Yee Ping received the University Gold Award.
A total of 4,535 UMP graduands will be graduating in the 17th UMP Convocation Ceremony session 1 and 2 today and will continue until 8 November 2022 at UMP Gambang Campus, now known as UMP Paya Besar.
