Syahirah represents Malaysia in Chinese Bridge Competition
PEKAN, 18 July 2021 - A student from the Faculty of Computing (FK), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Syahirah Syazwani Shamsudin won first place in the Chinese Bridge Competition Malaysia Preliminary 2021 organised by the Chinese Embassy in collaboration with Kongzi Institute, University of Malaya (UM) recently.
The competition was judged through tests, presentations, interviews and public speaking.
The success made Syahirah represent the country in international competition at the end of this year with candidates studying Mandarin as a foreign language from Asia, Europe, Africa, America and Australia.
According to the Director of Confucius Institute (CI), UMP, Yong Ying Mei, the Chinese Bridge Competition is an annual international competition organised by the Chinese Ministry of Education.
“CI UMP will continue to train students in preparation for the Chinese Bridge Competition at the international level.
“Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, it does not stop the programme from being conducted online and the presentation went well.
“For the second time, UMP will represent the country after the success of an FK student, Jamunaa Patchappan who represented the country in 2013,” she said.
She also thanked the university for its support in the involvement of students in language competitions at the UMP, national and international levels.
Students are trained by Volunteer Language Teachers (VLT) and receive full support from the Director of CI UMP (China), Professor Dr. Guo Fuliang.
Sharing the thrill of advancing to the international level, Syahirah will spend this semester break as a final preparation.
Also participating in the Chinese Bridge Competition Malaysia Preliminary 2021 were Adelia Febriani Zaid, Panita a/p Prepan, Muhammad Hasraf Aikal Khairul Ihsan and Khazimah Damia Rosfauwizamzamar.
The establishment of CI UMP successfully benefits UMP students in improving their Mandarin speaking skills and even understanding the culture of the Chinese community by organising activities, Mandarin language competitions, cultural exhibitions, mobility and collaboration programmes.
