TVET Outreach for Orang Asli spreads benefits of higher education

KUANTAN, 31 March 2022 - Over 300 Orang Asli of various ages attended the TVET Outreach Programme for Orang Asli@Lipis located in the Dewan Orang Ramai Pos Betau and Balai Raya Kampung Tementong Lipis.

This programme was organized by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP), Department of Orang Asli Development Pahang (JAKOA) and Department of Polytechnic Education and Community Colleges (JPPKK).

The public had the opportunity to get consultations from 13 exhibitors from public and private universities, educational forums, short-term courses in donut making, TVET Orang Asli Challenge, free motorcycle service and various educational programmes.

Also present were the Assistant Vice-Chancellor, Department of Industrial and Community Collaboration (JKIM), Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Nurul Hazlina Noordin, Director of Student Intake and Development Division, JPPKK, Noranyza Mohamad Yusoff and Director of UMP Centre for Marketing and Academic Intake (PPKA), Zainal Bahari.

According to Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Nurul Hazlina, this programme aimed to disseminate information and consultation to the local community about opportunities to pursue studies in IPT through UPU Online application.

“These children were also helped to fill out the UPU Online application which was held directly at the last minute after the application was closed.

“In addition to UMP, several IPTs participated in this programme, including Universiti Pertahanan Nasional Malaysia (UPNM), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Universiti Teknik Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) and others,” she said.

At the same time, UMP also installed solar panels to supply lights and telephone charging facilities in the hut opposite the Sungai Tementong Mosque.

This innovation can provide aid to illuminate and provide electricity sources around the mosque.

He added that the UMP Community Service Program (CSR) Lighting Up The Community is part of activities in conjunction with UMP’s 20th Anniversary Celebration which will be held during the year in line with UMP’s slogan ‘Technology for Society’.

Meanwhile, according to Zainal, various interesting activities were held, such as Yayasan UMP donations, lucky draws, donut making course, free motorcycle service and Face Painting conducted by JPPKK.

One of the visitors, Rosabeena Mohamad, expressed her delight with the programme.

For her, various information can be known, such as the academic programmes offered and how to apply for admission to IPT.

She hoped that more such programmes could be held in the future to help the Orang Asli community become more aware of education.
