AP Ir. Dr. Mohd Hafizi research receives MTE 2021 Special Award
PEKAN, 1 April 2021 – The research by Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Mohd Hafizi Zohari titled Fiber Bragg Grating System for Engineering Structures Health Monitoring received the MTE 2021 Chinese Innovation & Invention Society Taiwan Special Award and a gold medal in the Malaysia Technology Expo 2021 (MTE) held online recently.
During this competition, Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) won 15 medals which are one special award, five gold medals and nine silver medals.
According to Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Mohd Hafizi, the Deputy Dean (Research and Postgraduate Studies), Faculty of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering (FTKMA), he did not expect this victory and thanked UMP, especially the Research and Innovation Department (JPI) that endlessly granted opportunities for researchers to showcase their products beyond UMP’s borders.
“This product is the solution for the engineering structure monitoring system and provides information in real-time.
“The readily available products in the market are electric-based, limiting the number of sensors used because they need a copious and heavy wiring system.
“With the introduction of a sensor produced based on optical fibres, this problem can be solved. In fact, with its small size, it allows for use in places that the conventional sensor cannot reach,” he said.
Besides that, he said this product is compact, complete with software that is easily handled by the operator and can be brought to any location.
“Additionally, UMP’s support in providing grants for product development is highly appreciated.
“Without this help and support, it would be difficult for us to move forward,” he said.
Four more gold medals were won by Professor Dr. Muhammad Nubli Abdul Wahab from the Centre for Human Sciences (PSK) with his project Biodyslexia, Associate Professor Dr. Khairunisa Muthusamy with her project titled Clin-Litecrete, and Associate Professor Dr. Muhammad Sharfi Najib with his research, E-Anfun for Environmental Safety and Monitoring.
At the same time, Ts. Dr. Mohd Azrul Hisham Mohd Adib also won a gold medal with his research titled Infawrap Device.
Meanwhile, the silver medals were presented to nine UMP researchers, Professor Dr. Hayder A. Abdul Bari, Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Mohd Fairusham Ghazali, Associate Professor Ir. Ts. Dr. Kumaran Kadirgama, Associate Professor Dr. Md. Arafatur Rahman, Associate Professor Dr. Saiful Nizam Tajuddin, Dr. Lee Chia Kuang, Ts. Dr. Norazlianie Sazali, Dr. Mohammed Nazmus Shakib and Dr. Rajaletchumy Veloo Kutty.
The MTE 2021 Competition this year was organised differently from the previous years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The competition this time was organised online, with the researchers involved had to send a video to showcase and explain their innovation before being evaluated by the judges.
MTE 2021 is a platform for innovators, inventors and entrepreneurs to showcase their latest findings, ideas, prototypes, products and inventions to investors, producers, distributors and marketers in Asia.
