Elsevier-MTUN Symposium focuses on AI approach in improving the quality of teaching and learning
KUANTAN, 30 September 2024 - The organisation of the 3rd Elsevier MTUN Symposium in conjunction with Academia Day 2024 by Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) and Elsevier focuses on artificial intelligence (AI) approaches in strengthening the quality of teaching and learning, especially in the Malaysian Technical University Network (MTUN).
The symposium, gathering experts in universities and industry, will discuss and explore new discoveries, recent achievements and forward-thinking innovations in the field of artificial intelligence, especially in science, technology and engineering.
MTUN consists of UMPSA, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) and Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM).
Present at the opening ceremony was the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Ts. Mustapha Sakmud at Zenith Hotel, Kuantan today in the Opening Ceremony of the 3rd Elsevier-MTUN Symposium in conjunction with Academia Day 2024.
Also present were the UMPSA Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Ts. Dr. Yuserrie Zainuddin, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Professor Dato’ Ir. Ts. Dr. Ruzairi Abdul Rahim, Southeast Asia Regional Director of Elsevier, Omar Malik, UMPSA Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International Affairs), Professor Dato’ Ir. Ts. Dr. Ahmad Ziad Sulaiman and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), Professor Ir. Dr. Mohd Shukry Abdul Majid.
According to Datuk Dr. Mustapha, the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) has always supported initiatives to expand artificial intelligence, especially in science, technology and engineering at Higher Education Institutions (HEI) to improve the quality of teaching and research in Malaysian Technical University Network (MTUN).
MOHE will continue to encourage universities in the country to use AI approaches in academics and research in line with technological sophistication and change of time in addition to needing to be supported by expertise in the fields involved.
“Elsevier-MTUN's collaboration in accessing databases such as Scopus, ScienceDirect and tools such as Mendeley will improve the quality of research and learning in producing scientific works as well as facilitate collaboration between researchers.
“With access to these tools, MTUN can increase the level of publication and visibility of their research results globally,” he said.
Meanwhile, Academia Day 2024 has a greater meaning for educational institutions in empowering academics and research development.
Meanwhile, Professor Dato’ Ts. Dr. Yuserrie said MTUN is committed to producing graduates who are not only in demand by the industry but also equipped with the advanced knowledge and skills needed to excel in a rapidly developing and technology-driven world.
He said that this symposium reflects MTUN's continuous commitment to improving the quality of teaching and research by integrating AI in higher education and research initiatives to meet the needs of domestic and foreign industries.
There was also an exchange of memorandums of understanding (MoU) between UMPSA and Elsevier and UTHM and Elsevier witnessed by the Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Ts. Mustapha Sakmud.
In addition, the academic forum that was conducted featured a panel consisting of Professor Dr. Sharifah Sakinah Syed Ahmad from the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology, UTeM, Professor Ir. Dr. Mohd Shukry Abdul Majid, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International) of UniMAP, Professor Ts. Dr. Aida Mustapha, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) of UMPSA and Professor Ts. Dr. Rabiah Ahmad, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) of UTHM.
Meanwhile, Professor Ir. Dr. Mohd Faizal Jamlos shared his expertise with the title “Closed Systems in the AI Campus Development Ecosystem” and UMPSA Assistant Vice-Chancellor for Academic Development, Professor Ts. Dr. Kamal Yusoh discussed the title “Integration of Embedded Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the Curriculum Structure of Higher Education Academic Programs”.
