PEKAN: Professor Dr Yatimah Alias has made history as the first woman appointed as vice-chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), succeeding Professor Datuk Ts Dr Yuserrie Zainuddin, whose term ended on Oct 31 last year.
Previously serving as deputy vice-chancellor (Academic and International) at Universiti Malaya since 2022, the 55-year-old expert in electrochemistry and ionic liquids began her two-year tenure at UMPSA's Tun Abdul Razak Chancellery yesterday.
Expressing her commitment to UMPSA's vision, she described the university — part of the Malaysian Technical University Network (MTUN) — as a leader in impactful innovation and international academic collaborations.
"I am honoured by this meaningful opportunity and will do my best to propel UMPSA to greater heights in technology and engineering.

She extended her gratitude to Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir, Higher Education director-general Professor Dr Azlinda Azman, her predecessor Yuserrie, and acting vice-chancellor Professor Dr Aida Mustapha for their support.
Yatimah holds a PhD in electrochemistry-inorganic from the University of East Anglia, UK (1999), and both a bachelor's and master's degree in chemistry from Universiti Malaya (1993, 1996).
UMPSA, celebrating its 23rd anniversary next month, operates campuses in Gambang, Kuantan, and Kuala Pahang, Pekan.
Formerly known as Universiti Malaysia Pahang, the institution underwent a name change on April 14, 2023, to reflect its continued growth and excellence.
