Bakul Rahmah KPT-UMP helps flood victims in Kota Tinggi

KOTA TINGGI, 30 January 2023 - Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) mobilised the Southern Flood Volunteer Mission by distributing donations to help flood victims in Teluk Hutan Lesung Village, Tanjung Sedili, Kota Tinggi.

A total of 100 donations of Bakul Rahmah KPT-UMP in the form of food and necessities as well as 200 sets of Ready to Eat food packages through retort technology under the food@campus initiative (UMP Campus Pantry) in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) were distributed to help flood victims.

Minister of Higher Education, Yang Berhormat Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin was present to support the residents and deliver the donation of Bakul Rahmah KPT at Sekolah Kebangsaan Teluk Hutan Lesung, Kota Tinggi which housed 28 families of flood victims.

Also present were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) of Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP), Professor Dr. Mohd Fo’ad Sakdan who is also the Chairman of the Student Volunteer Council of Malaysia Universities (MASKUM) and the Head of the Flood Disaster Relief Centre, Neek Ahmad Suhaimi Neek Sazali.

According to Professor Dato’ Ts. Dr. Yuserrie, in the first stage, 3,500 food packs were distributed at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) and Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) to victims of the east coast floods in December.

“This time, we are going to distribute food to help the communities in Kota Tinggi that are still affected by the floods and are still in flood relief centres.

“With Zero Hunger in mind, this assistance provides emergency food to enable them to get healthy and ready-to-eat food.

“The initiative by UMP and Yayasan UMP with the support of MOHE allows those affected by the flood here to get food prepared using retort technology such as rice with chicken in sambal, meat in soy sauce and fried rice,” he said.

He further said that Kilau UMP volunteers among staff and students are always ready to assist in post-flood activities to ease the burden on families.

For Neek Ahmad, he appreciated the presence of Dato’ Seri Mohamed Khaled and MOHE as well as the volunteers of the Higher Education Institution (IPT).

“In addition, a lot of assistance was received from various agencies including food assistance, health checks and logistics, especially when communication was cut due to flooding lasting for several days,” he said.
