UMP collaborates with PETRONAS in the Higher Education Strategic Initiatives (CHESS)
KUALA LUMPUR, June 3, 2023 - Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) and Petroliam Nasional Berhad (PETRONAS) recently exchanged Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) documents to facilitate the implementation of the Higher Education Strategic Initiatives (CHESS) program as a catalyst for industry-academic knowledge sharing in the technical field.
The collaboration will contribute to the development of human capital in Malaysia to enhance learning, guidance and development, research, publications, staff exchange, and technical areas related to the energy industry.
According to UMP's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Ts. Dr. Yuserrie Zainuddin, through this collaboration, PETRONAS will share industry knowledge and best practices through lectures, seminars, training, and guidance for lecturers and final year students.
“UMP, which specializes in engineering and technology, will share its academic expertise with PETRONAS.
“In addition, this collaboration also involves offering dual degrees and community collaborations,” he said.
He added that this effort is in line with UMP’s Strategic Plan 2021-2025, which encourages all researchers to actively participate in the research and commercialization ecosystem.
He exchanged documents with PETRONAS Senior Vice President of Project Delivery and Technology Delivery, Dato’ Bacho Pilong at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (the Centre) in conjunction with the CHESS Symposium 2023, inaugurated by the Director-General of Higher Education, Professor Dr. Azlinda Azman.
Apart from UMP, other universities involved in this MoU are Multimedia University (MMU), Asia Pacific University (APU), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Universiti Selangor (UNISEL), and Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN).
Also present at the program were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International Affairs), Professor Ir. Ts. Dr. Ahmad Ziad Sulaiman, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Industry and Community Collaboration, Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Nurul Hazlina Noordin, and Dean of the Faculty of Chemical and Process Engineering Technology (FTKKP), Professor Ts. Dr. Che Ku Mohammad Faisal Che Ku Yahya.
UMP also showcased two commercial products, the Electronic Nose (E-Nose) and Fiber Bragg Grating Measurement System, involving the research of Associate Professor Dr. Muhammad Sharfi Najib, Lecturer in the Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology (FTKEE), and Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Hafizi Zohari, Lecturer in the Faculty of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering Technology (FTKMA).
