3 medals for UMP in SUKUM 2022
SERDANG, 27 September 2022 – Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) took home two gold and one bronze medals in the 2022 Intervarsity Staff Sports (SUKUM) at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) recently.
UMP cycling athlete Associate Professor Dr. Mohd Fakhrurrazi Ishak, 47, won two gold medals in the Men’s Road Bike (RB) (VIP) and Men’s Mountain Bike (MTB) (VIP) race events.
He, a lecturer at the Faculty of Civil Engineering Technology (FTKA), was grateful, and his training was worthwhile when he successfully bagged gold medals for UMP.
He added that in SUKUM 2018, he only won a silver medal in the same sporting event.
“I would like to thank the university management for the encouragement and the coach, Aminudin Sulaiman, a former national coach, who has taught a lot over the years.
“At first, I felt a bit shaky when I saw young athletes from other universities.
“However, alhamdulillah, this time the victory is mine,” he said.
He hoped that in the future, UMP would be able to produce more cycling athletes and maintain excellence in cycling events.
The cycling events were participated by 12 athletes representing UMP.
For the Men’s Road Bike (RB) (VIP) event, he was ahead of athletes from Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) with a time of 52 minutes 38.79 seconds in the 27-kilometre race.
While for the Mountain Bike (MTB) event, he was ahead of the athletes from Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) and Universiti Perguruan Sultan Idris (UPSI) with a time of 52 minutes 59.70 seconds in the 18-kilometre race.
In addition to the cycling event, the futsal team shared bronze medals with Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) after being beaten by the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) team in the semifinal at Futsal Sport Arena UNITEN, Bangi.
The UMP futsal squad is managed by FTKA lecturer Dr. Abdul Syukor Abd Razak cum the UMP futsal team manager with the help of the team coach, Wan Suratman Adnan Wan Roslee.
For the futsal event, UMP won Group B with 7 points through the following matches: UMP won against UTM by 5-0, drew against UM by 1-1 and won against KPT by 6-1 thus qualifying them for the semifinal.
The UMP futsal team captain, Shaharul Anuar Ismail, said the players had done their best to reach the final, only to reach the semifinal.
“However, it has encouraged us to continue fighting to bring medals for UMP.
Meanwhile, the UMP Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Ts. Dr. Yuserrie Zainudin appreciated the commitment of the athletes who have bagged medals for UMP.
The tournament saw UMP Registrar Saiful Bahri Ahmad Bakarim as the Chef De Mission and Senior Deputy Registrar, Abd. Rahman Haji Safie as the Deputy Chef De Mission.
