More than 300 UMP volunteers help clean up flood waste
KUANTAN, 28 December 2021 - The post-flood volunteer activities that took place recently at Perumahan Awam Kos Rendah (PAKR) Sungai Pandan Taman Bukit Rangin Aman focused on cleaning in the house and the vicinity due to the pile of rubbish in front of the house which risks threatening the health of the residents.
Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) volunteers participated in the Paya Besar Post-Flood Relief Mission which was also joined by more than 300 students and staff, including from UMP subsidiary, UMP Advanced Education and UMP Holdings Group, IHLs, NGOs, government agencies, Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM) and also the local community.
The presence of these volunteers gave relief to the residents in cleaning up the flood waste around the badly affected residential areas.
The volunteer activity was also joined by the Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Dr. Noraini Ahmad, Deputy Secretary General (Management and Development), Dr. Mohd. Zabri Yusoff, Director General of Higher Education, Professor Dato’ Dr. Husaini Omar, UMP Board member, Datuk Mohd. Sharil Abdullah and Professor Dato’ Ts. Dr. Yuserrie Zainuddin who performs the functions of the Vice-Chancellor of UMP.
According to Professor Dato’ Ts. Dr. Yuserrie, the involvement of these volunteers was much needed to transport the garbage from the flood-ravaged houses and from the alleys to be transferred into the trucks provided to the landfill.
“A total of 100 UMP volunteers helped clean the residents’ houses and rubbish piles after the residents washed their houses.
“Excavators and lorries also help speed up the efforts to clean up the flood waste,” he said.
The community here also has the opportunity to undergo a health check at the MERCY Malaysia Pahang Chapter mobile clinic which operated to help them get medicine and those infected with diseases caused by the flood.
The volunteers also handed over hygiene kits to flood victims.
In the meantime, since 17 December, the UMP operations rooms have been coordinating the movement of volunteer missions involving UMP volunteers and several other Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) to organise post-flood assistance since the flood hit the state.
A total of 1,000 staff and student volunteers helped clean the badly affected houses in more than 20 residential areas involving the districts of Pekan, Kuantan, Temerloh and Mentakab.
