Faculty of Computing researchers share expertise in recreational fisheries digital transformation projects

KUANTAN, 12 November 2020 - Four researchers from the Faculty of Computing (FK), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) shared their expertise through the research grant project of the Ministry of Higher Education - University for Society (KPT-U4S), which will benefit the fishing community in Merang, Terengganu.

Also involved in this project are researchers from Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK), and Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UniSZA).

According to the Project Leader, Dr. Jamaludin Sallim, along with three other researchers, Dr. Rozlina Mohamed, Dr. Yusnita Mohammad Noor and Dr. Suraya Abu Bakar, they have been given the responsibility to accelerate the digitalisation transition agenda which is crucial for fishermen to carry out activities in the waters.

“The project, which started in August 2020, has several main objectives, namely to help improve entrepreneurial skills, soft skills, fisheries science, and digital applications among fishermen. 

“Currently, we are still collecting and analysing data for digital application needs with fishermen as well as to foster understanding and awareness on the transformation that will be carried out.  

“We are grateful to MoHE, which has approved the KPT-U4S grant amounting to RM40,000 to conduct research with the local fishing community,” he said.  

He also thanked the UMP Centre for Industry & Community Network (ICoN) for playing a vital role in the success of this project.

He said among those areas that will be developed are the internet of things (IoT) technology and innovative digital applications of recreational fisheries involving the community in Pulau Redang, Bidong, and Bara, Terengganu.

“Besides that, this initiative is also a part of MoHE’s joint efforts with UMP in helping the digital transition of recreational fisheries. 

“It is in line with the ministry’s goal to develop the expertise of researchers at the university to benefit the community and open wider socio-economic potential for fishermen in the country,” he said.
