UMP launches 8 Campus Sustainability Initiative Campaigns
PEKAN, 23 February 2023 - Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) launched eight Sustainability Initiative Campaigns to raise awareness of campus residents to protect the environment in line with the realisation of the university’s aspiration towards a Sustainable Campus.
The launch was graced by the UMP Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Ts. Dr. Yuserrie Zainuddin with a symbolic event of signing the Sustainability Initiative Campaign poster in conjunction with the Vice-Chancellor’s 2023 Mandate Event at the UMP Pekan Multipurpose Hall recently.
Also present were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs & Alumni), Professor Ts. Dr. Mohd Rusllim Mohamed who performs the functions of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International), Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Professor Ts. Dr. Kamal Zuhairi Zamli, Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Centre for Corporate Affairs and Quality), Professor Ts. Dr. Kamal Yusoh and UMP’s top management.
In his speech, Professor Dato’ Ts. Dr. Yuserrie called on UMP associates to strive to introduce sustainability technology and practices to the community, not only educating but also becoming role models on sustainability principles.
“UMP has now made encouraging progress in strengthening sustainable practices through various university programmes.
“In order to achieve the Sustainable Campus Development Goal in Plan 5C(2), UMP has successfully achieved the sustainable campus development progress target of 83.84 per cent in the fourth quarter (Q4) 2022, exceeding the previous target of 74 per cent.
“This shows UMP’s commitment in building a sustainable campus,” he said.
Thus in 2023, the Sustainable Campus Initiative will be further accelerated with various activities such as tree planting, energy and resource savings and carbon reduction in UMP.
This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 7).
The eight Sustainability Initiative Campaigns consist of Hydrate: Drink plain water and bring your own water bottle, Let’s takeaway: Bring your own container, green the environment, UMP recycling day: Reducing waste, one step at a time, and Healthy lifestyle: Choose wellness every day.
While the other three initiatives are Organic waste Separation: Composting for a greener future, Go green: Turn your waste into a sustainable resource, and Carbon free vehicle: Go green on the road.
He hoped that UMP associates would continue to work together and always work hard to strengthen the university’s culture of sustainable practices to protect the environment and contribute to sustainable development.
In addition, every UMP associate must give their full commitment and contribution to reducing the negative impact on the environment caused by daily activities and using resources optimally without affecting the needs of future generations.
UMP is ranked 103rd best in the world in the UI-Green Metric World University Ranking 2022, based on the sustainability efforts of green campuses and environmental management.
Other sustainability ratings include the 2023 QS World University Sustainability Rankings (403-450) and the 2022 Times Higher Education (THE) Impact Rankings (301-400).
