Dr. Sreenath Sukumaran and Shafiqah receive UMP Postgraduate Research Prize
PAYA BESAR, 5 November 2022 – Dr. Sreenath Sukumaran, 29 and Shafiqah Hanis Mohd Fauzi, 26, were overjoyed to receive the UMP Postgraduate Research Award at the recent Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) 17th Convocation Ceremony.
They were thrilled because the challenges faced throughout the learning process, especially as the world faced the COVID-19 pandemic, were deeply felt.
According to Dr. Sreenath, a full-time doctoral research student at UMP, when the world was dealing with movement restrictions, he also went through the experience especially feeling depressed and homesick because he was at UMP.
“However, I am grateful that my supervisor, Dr. Sudhakar and UMP in general were very helpful to me at that time,” he, who was from Ernakulam, India, said.
Dr. Sreenath is currently working as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Tallinn University of Technology, Estonia.
In the opinion of Dr. Sreenath, UMP provides a great platform for learning, in line with UMP’s achievement of being listed in the world’s universities ranking.
“In addition, I was appointed as Secretary of the Postgraduate Association (PGA) and assisted in organising conferences and workshops.
“I think that UMP largely provides adequate learning facilities, places and tools, and comfortable classes.
“My supervisor also helped me a lot in improving my thesis, giving feedback on my presentation style and was never tired of giving me advice and guidance,” he said.
In contrast, Shafiqah Hanis, a Master of Science graduand, only managed to attend two classes with her postgraduate supervisor, Ts. Dr. Norazaliza Mohd Jamil.
“It started to get challenging because I felt it difficult to communicate online and it was easier to discuss face to face.
“But that wasn’t an obstacle for me to succeed because everything has its own challenge.
“Success is definitely not something that comes easy,” said Syafiqah.
Shafiqah Hanis is currently working as a Quality Control Officer and Document Controller cum maintenance officer at Maestro Laboratories Sdn. Bhd.
Shafiqah added that she disciplined herself to submit the assignments on time or before the deadline.
“This is a good value to apply among students because it will be useful for the work environment.
“The other teaching staff who are my examiners are also very kind but strict in teaching and giving feedback,” she explained.
