UMPSA extends assistance to student affected by house fire

KUALA TERENGGANU, 4 June 2026 – Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) remains committed to safeguarding the welfare of its students by extending assistance to a student affected by a house fire on 2 June.
The student, Nor Damia Batrisyia Mohamad Yusri, who is studying at the Faculty of Industrial Sciences and Technology (FSTI), lost her family home in the fire, which occurred after Maghrib prayer at Jalan Tok Hakim, Kuala Terengganu.

According to information received, Nor Damia and her family members were at her grandmother’s house when the incident occurred.

“Thankfully, no injuries or loss of life were reported in the incident,” she said.

The fire destroyed nearly 70 per cent of the house, and the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia.

For the time being, the family is temporarily staying at the home of their grandparents as all their belongings and basic necessities were destroyed.

Concerned about the misfortune that befell the student, a representative from the Welfare Financing and Discipline Division, Department of Student Affairs and Alumni (JHEPA), Mohd Safwan Rizal Saripudin, together with an FSTI lecturer, Ts. Dr. Siti Noor Hidayah Mustapha, visited the student’s family to provide moral support and welfare assistance.

During the visit, UMPSA also provided financial assistance totalling RM1,000, comprising RM500 through the UMPSA Skim Kasih Benefit under the Ihsan Musibah category and an RM500 individual contribution from FSTI, to help ease the burden faced by the student and her family.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ts. Dr. Yatimah Alias, said the university is always concerned about the welfare of its students and will continue striving to assist those facing misfortune or hardship.

“UMPSA is not merely an educational institution, but also a large family that always stands together with members of the university community in any circumstances.

“We hope that the assistance provided will help ease some of the burden borne by Nor Damia and her family and give them the strength to remain resilient in facing this difficult time.

“I would also like to express my appreciation to all parties who have come forward to provide assistance and support.

“May the affairs of the student’s family be eased and may they be granted resilience and strength to rebuild their lives,” she said.

She added that UMPSA remains committed to fostering a culture of care and concern for the welfare of the university community, particularly students facing emergencies or unforeseen hardships.

“The provision of assistance through Skim Kasih UMPSA is one of the university’s ongoing efforts to ensure that student welfare remains a priority, enabling them to continue their studies with greater peace of mind despite facing challenges in life,” she said.

UMPSA prays that Nor Damia Batrisyia and her family will continue to be granted strength and that all their affairs will be eased as they face this difficult time.
