UMP leaps to 129th best university in Asia

PEKAN, 2 November 2021 - Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) leaped to 129th spot compared to 133 last year in the QS Asia University Rankings announced by the international rating agency QS Quacquarelli Symonds for 2022.

The evaluation conducted on 687 institutions across Asia with 40 new entries was based on 11 indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations per paper, papers per faculty, and staff with a PhD.

The other criteria are international research network, proportion of international faculty, proportion of international students, proportion of inbound exchange students, and proportion of outbound exchange students.

Professor Dato’ Ts. Dr. Yuserrie Zainuddin, who acts as the Vice-Chancellor of UMP, congratulated the UMP residents on this achievement.

“This success positions UMP as the best university among the Malaysian Technological University Network (MTUN).

“UMP will continue to strengthen its efforts in advancing and expanding higher education by focusing on high-level education and Technical and Vocational Training (TVET).

“UMP will also always strengthen its role as a technological university in MTUN that can contribute to the development of society and the country,” he said.

At the same time, he also shared another success when UMP was also listed in The Best Global Universities Rankings in the US News & World Report that measures an institution’s academic research performance based on 13 indicators, including global and regional reputations.

Based on the report, UMP is ranked 1,058th best in the world, 258th best in Asia, and 9th best among universities in Malaysia.

While the Energy and Fuels subject is ranked 173rd in the world, the Engineering subject is ranked 343rd, and the Chemistry subject is ranked 734th.

In addition, Stanford University in the United States recently announced that 12 UMP lecturers were listed among the two per cent of the best scientists in the world in various fields and disciplines of Engineering, Science, and Technology.

This recognition will encourage interaction between local and international researchers and industries to pursue academic excellence and create research opportunities to communitise technology.
 
Various efforts are being developed to focus on improving the country’s technical capabilities, including offering industry-driven academic programmes to produce holistic graduates.

Meanwhile, the UMP Strategic Plan 2021-2025 will now position UMP to continue achieving glory with six strategic objectives, namely high-level TVET excellence, innovation with industry collaboration, high-impact technology empowerment, financial sustainability, university ecosystem excellence, and graduate entrepreneurship.
