UMPSA hosts 8th International Conference on Mechanical Engineering Research (ICMER 2025) in Kuala Lumpur

KUALA LUMPUR, 6 August 2025 - Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) officially opened the 8th International Conference on Mechanical Engineering Research (ICMER 2025) at The Pearl Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, from 6 to 7 August 2025.

The event, organised by the Faculty of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering Technology (FTKMA) in collaboration with the University of Mindanao, the Philippines, and Universitas Hasanuddin, Indonesia, gathers leading academics, industry experts, and postgraduate researchers from Malaysia and abroad to exchange ideas and share cutting-edge developments in the field of mechanical engineering.

The opening speech, delivered by Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), Professor Ts. Dr. Aida Mustapha, on behalf of the UMPSA Vice-Chancellor, extended a warm welcome to all delegates.

She congratulated FTKMA for successfully organising the conference and acknowledged the strong participation of international and local speakers, including Executive Chief Engineer, R&D, Perusahaan Otomobil Nasional Sdn. Bhd. (PROTON), Nordiana Noordin,  Professor Ir. Dr. Mohd Faizal Jamlos from UMPSA, and Associate Professor Dr. Sumsun Naher from the University of London, United Kingdom, who delivered a keynote on ‘Interdisciplinary Research in Optical and Gas Sensing at CitySG: A Vision for Future Collaboration’.

Professor Aida also expressed appreciation to the University of Mindanao and Universitas Hasanuddin for their roles as co-organisers, noting that such collaborations strengthen UMPSA’s position as a dynamic and resource-rich platform for global research engagement.

The theme of ICMER 2025, ‘Technology Breakthroughs for Eco-Mobility’, reflects one of the most pressing global priorities, the transition towards green, sustainable, and smart mobility.

Professor Aida highlighted that since the introduction of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, the push for environmentally friendly solutions has intensified across governments, industries, and academia.

“As awareness of green solutions grows, organisations must actively adopt initiatives to reduce environmental impact.

“For academia, this trend presents vast opportunities for research and innovation in technologies that not only address sustainability goals but also stimulate new market demand and economic growth,” she said.

Professor Aida shared UMPSA’s commitment to sustainability through its Campus Sustainability Initiative, which includes eight key programmes aimed at raising environmental awareness among campus residents.

She noted that the ICMER 2025 theme aligns closely with the university’s aspiration to become a sustainable campus, underscoring FTKMA’s dedication to advancing knowledge and innovation in line with global trends.

Tracing the history of the conference, she recalled that the inaugural event began as the National Conference on Mechanical Engineering Research (NCMER) in 2010, with its first two editions held on campus.

In 2012, it was rebranded as the International Conference on Mechanical Engineering Research (ICMER), reflecting its growing international stature.

Over the years, ICMER has become a vital platform for fostering collaboration, sharing research findings, and nurturing innovation among mechanical engineering professionals and students.

This year’s conference continues that tradition, providing opportunities for postgraduate students, researchers, and industry practitioners to present their latest work, network with peers, and explore future research directions.

Professor Aida concluded that, with the rapid advances in mechanical engineering technology, ICMER 2025 plays a critical role in bridging academic research and industrial application, while promoting a culture of innovation.

The two-day event features keynote addresses, technical sessions, and networking opportunities, reaffirming UMPSA’s commitment to driving excellence in research and contributing to sustainable technological development in Malaysia and beyond.
