UMPSA receives 8 engines donated by Mercedes-Benz

PEKAN, 2 August 2024 – Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) has received a donation of eight engines—two 2.0-liter turbo engines and six 1.8-liter engines—donated by luxury car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz. 

The contribution aims to support students' education and training programmes in the field of Automotive Engineering.

The handover ceremony took place at the UMPSA Pekan Banquet Hall, where the engines were delivered by Andreas Lettner, Vice-President and Head of CKD Operations at Mercedes-Benz (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. 

He presented them to Professor Ts. Dr. Aida Mustapha, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation), who represented UMPSA Vice-Chancellor Professor Dato' Ts. Dr. Yuserrie Zainuddin at the event.

According to Professor Ts. Dr. Aida, UMPSA and Mercedes-Benz Malaysia share a long and fruitful history of collaboration, working together to enhance knowledge, provide practical learning opportunities, and improve the Automotive Engineering Programme.

"Through this collaboration, UMPSA benefits significantly in its efforts to develop highly skilled human capital to meet industry needs. 

“The university greatly appreciates the contribution from Mercedes-Benz and hopes that the donated engines will enhance our training programmes and help cultivate future talents for Malaysia’s automotive industry,” she said during the Car Engine Handover Ceremony.

She added that the engine donation would strengthen UMPSA’s ability to deliver practical, industry-related education in Automotive Engineering.

"In addition, UMPSA boasts seven centres of excellence, including the Automotive Engineering Centre (AEC), which specializes in automotive expertise. 

“As part of the Malaysian Technical Universities Network (MTUN), UMPSA also has a Technology-Industry Centre of Excellence (Ti-CoE), which focuses on fostering greater collaboration with industry partners in research, innovation, product development, and showcasing cutting-edge technologies and advanced materials," she explained.

Meanwhile, Andreas Lettner emphasized that the contribution is part of Mercedes-Benz’s corporate social responsibility toward the community and the university.

"Currently, more than 20 UMPSA alumni are working as engineers or undergoing practical training at the Mercedes-Benz factory in Pekan," he noted.

Also present at the ceremony were Professor Ir. Ts. Dr. Ahmad Ziad Sulaiman, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International Affairs), Azlan A. Halip, General Manager of Production and Logistics at Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, Nordin Awalluddin, Quality Manager at Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, and Professor Dr. Rizalman Mamat, Director of the Automotive Engineering Centre (AEC).
