Singgah Sahur UMP: Appreciating the local community
Kuantan, 2 June – For the fifth year in a row, Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) organized a programme called ‘Singgah Sahur’ where they distribute meals for sahur during the month of Ramadhan to the security personnel, government agencies, orphanage and the local community around Kuantan.
Joining this year’s programme were 60 volunteers from the Student Affairs & Alumni Sports, Recreation and Welfare Club (Respec) and the Vice Chancellor’s Office with collaboration from UMP Alumni Society involving various locations namely Gambang Toll Booth, Kuantan Fire Brigade Headquarters, Tunku Ampuan Afzan Hospital, Kuantan Police Headquarters, Teluk Chempedak and Nur Iman Home for the Orphan and the Poor, Kuantan
Also joining the programme are the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs & Alumni), Professor Dato’ Dr. Yuserrie Zainuddin, Dean of Student Affairs & Alumni, Dr. Muhamad Mat Noor and the General Manager of Student Affairs & Alumni, Mr. Abd Rahman Hj Safie.
According to Professor Dato’ Dr. Yuserrie, this programme is focusing on the people who are working the night shift especially government servants and government agencies tasked to safeguard the security and safety of the community. The concept of this programme is to drop by their working place and handing over some food for them to perform their ‘sahur’.
“This programme that involves the staff and students of UMP enable them to have a closer interaction with the local community thus have better understanding of their way of life and inculcate good moral values” he said. In addition, this programme also enable us to show our gratitude to all the personnel who have contributed to our nation as well as celebrating the holy month of Ramadhan.
The Deputy Medical Director 2 of HTAA, Datuk Dr. Daud Osman said that his office has always supported and welcomed any programme that will benefited the local society. He and his department is proud of this initiative and hope that it can be continued in the future.
Meanwhile, the volunteers also had a chance to perform the ‘sahur’ with the residence of Nur Iman Home for the Orphan and the Poor. The President of UMP Alumni, Tuan Syed Hamzah Al Junid Syed Abdul Rahman delivered ‘duit raya’ as well as a RM3000 donation to the Principal of Nur Iman Home for the Orphan and the Poor, Ustaz Haji Badrul Huzaini.
This Ramadhan, they also organized a programme called “Ziarah Prihatin Ramadhan” which includes gathering donations to help more than 100 families including single mothers, chronic patients, senior citizen, and ‘mualaf’ or newly converted to Islam around the Kuantan area. They are also grateful to the sponsors especially to the organizing committee, volunteers, JHEPA staff, UMP alumni, UMP staff, Pahang Association of Welfare NGOs as well as individual contributors whom in total of RM27,000 to be distributed among the needy.
