7,071 UMP students back on campus

PEKAN, 7 March 2022 – A total of 7,071 Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) students are returning to both the Pekan and Gambang campuses starting on 4 March in stages for physical academic activities for Semester II Academic Session 2021/2022.

This follows the announcement of the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) regarding the gradual admission of students to higher education institutions (HEIs) starting 1 March, at 70% to 100% respective HEIs capacities.

The admission process to the UMP campuses went smooth when all students and parents adhered to the standard operating procedures (SOP).

According to the UMP Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ts. Dr. Yuserrie Zainuddin, the opportunity to return to campus allows students, especially the new students who have never stepped on campus, to familiarise and adapt to the learning system and life on campus.

“In order for the university to ensure the safe return, the Student Affairs Department (JHEP), in collaboration with the Academic & International Affairs Department (JHEAA), University Health Centre (PKU) and Security Division (BKES), always coordinates the movement of students entering the campus by prioritising their safety and health.

“Students are also advised to always comply with the teaching and learning SOPs and general SOPs such as wearing a face mask, practicing physical distancing and always maintaining personal hygiene,” he said.

The President of the UMP Students’ Representative Council (MPP) 2021/2022, Ahmad Fahmi Fazli said, currently, academic activities are still carried out in a hybrid mode, namely face-to-face and online, according to their respective faculties, but the number of students on campus is increasing.

“It seems that students are happy to be back on campus to enjoy university life with friends after two years of studying online even though there were many of them already on campus during that time.

“Almost all cafeterias are opened and operate normally, and recreational activities are permitted such as hiking, kayaking, volleyball and futsal,” he said.

However, he also advised students to prioritise their health and safety during the transition to the endemic phase on 1 April as announced by the government.

He believed that students can experience life in line with this endemic with proactive thinking and integrity, thus achieving success while creating sweet memories at UMP.

Meanwhile, a student from the Faculty of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Technology (FTKEE), Nur Humairrah Solehah Mohd. Sofian felt excited to be back as she had been off campus for more than two years.

“It is really exciting and fun to be back on campus. 

“It is good to meet friends and also funny the last time we met was in year one and now we are in year three,” she said.

Now, she said, students live the new norm of having to scan the MySejahtera QR code before entering the lecture room, wearing a mask, practising physical distancing and others.
