Recipient of UMPSA-German Dual Degree Academic Excellence Prize best graduate in Hochschule Reutlingen

GAMBANG, 21 October 2023 – The dual degree programme that started in 2010 has seen 293 students successfully graduate and are now all over the globe with different expertise including Joel Marianus Mukui, 27 who successfully obtained the UMPSA-German Dual Degree Academic Excellence Prize.

The graduand of the Bachelor of Business Engineering with Honours from the Faculty of Industrial Management (FPI) UMPSA was also awarded the best graduate while studying at Hochschule Reutlingen, Germany.

He said, “Not all universities in Malaysia offer dual degree programmes; this is the uniqueness of UMPSA.

“To complete my study, I had the opportunity to study in Germany for two years.

“Not only did I get two degrees from two universities, but I also gained invaluable experience by having the experience of studying in another country.

“My success at Hochschule Reutlingen proves that we as Malaysians are also competent on the world stage,” he said.

This Kadazan Dusun lad who grew up in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah obtained a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.89 and he was also active during his study.

He was given the responsibility of holding the position of Director of German Day for the Business Engineering programme, teaching English at Sekolah Rendah Sungai Isap for the corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme, becoming a tutor for the Sensei Gokusei programme to new students by providing spiritual, academic and sports support, and participating in the Negaraku Vibes Festival Singing Competition.

His father, Marianus Mukui, 57 works as a clerk and his mother, Dorin Verus, 57 is a housewife.

This second child of three siblings said the biggest contributor to his success now is his parents.

“They are my backbone to keep trying my best in whatever I’ve been doing so far.

“A passing mark is normal, but a high mark is something unique that separates us from normal.

“I know that getting a high mark can make my parents happy,” he said, who is good at dividing his time with fellow friends who also helped him to succeed.

Therefore, he always strives to get consistent marks in each semester.

“Don’t let the failures we faced in the past be the reason we can’t move forward but use those failures as motivation to keep trying to do the best.

“To me, we will not be able to recognise how great our potential to achieve success is if we never experience failure.

“Failure is not the end; it is part of the process to success.

“Hold on to that failure as motivation to be able to make something better,” he added.

In addition, he thinks that the facilities provided by the university are very helpful in the student learning process.

The online classes that had to be done during the COVID-19 epidemic hit the world were also well implemented.

He, who currently serves as Product Master Data Tools at Bosch GmbH in Germany, feels that the scope of his current work is the same as what he learned at UMPSA, where he is responsible for collecting data related to products in the entire supply chain spanning four countries, namely Germany, China, Malaysia, and the United States, as well as creating automatic data transfers to further streamline the operational process.
