Opportunity to add skills in the field of rail development

KUANTAN, 6 April 2021 - The selection of Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) as the Tester Training Module training centre in the Industrial Skills Training Programme (PLKI ECRL) provides an opportunity for UMP to contribute towards the construction of the high-profile project of East Coast Rail Link (ECRL).

Recently, the exchange document event involved the Senior Manager, Malaysia Rail Link Sdn. Bhd. (MRL), Tariq Umar Mohamed and Assistant Human Resource Manager, China Communications Construction Company (M) Sdn. Bhd. (CCCC), Lee Foong Mei.

Present to exchange documents were the Dean of Industrial Innovation, UMP Research and Innovation Department, Associate Professor Dr. Abdul Adam Abdullah.

Also present were the Director of the Centre for Design and Innovation of Technology (PRInT) and a lecturer of the College of Engineering, Dr. Doh Shu Ing.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Abdul Adam, the UMP management would like to thank MRL and CCCC for choosing UMP as the operator of this skills training.

“Collaboration with MRL and CCCC can provide added value to all university residents and the local community, especially in Pahang Darul Makmur.

“By offering this industrial training programme, the community and society, especially the young people around the East Coast, can seize job opportunities besides gaining knowledge and skills in the field of rail development.
“Besides that, the industrial training programme which started earlier this month involves the expertise of lecturers and the use of laboratories and lecture halls at the Faculty of Civil Engineering Technology (FTKA) and the College of Engineering,” he said.
The programme also involved language teachers from the Confucius Institute who assisted in the teaching and learning Mandarin to participants in preparation for future ECRL technocrats with communication skills and fluency in Mandarin.
He hopes that more opportunities can be explored, and this strategic network can also be continued by diversifying related modules in line with the UMP Strategic Plan 2021-2025, especially the target of increasing the number of industrial workers undergoing industrial training at UMP.
Meanwhile, Tariq Umar Mohamed said, a total of 32 trainees have been successfully selected to participate in this training session for two months, one month at UMP and one month at the ECRL development site.

He hopes that more trainees will follow the PLKI 2.0 programme and encourages the local people to participate in this project.

This year, they will appoint 500 trainees to participate in this programme, and currently, they have the second intake after the first intake in Bachok, Kelantan.

A participant of the programme, Nur Faizatul Syuhada Mohd Zahari, an alumnus of the Faculty of Civil Engineering Technology (FTKA) said, she was grateful for the offer received as she had long intended to participate in this programme.

“Hopefully, all these knowledge and experiences qualify me to be offered a job in a related field,” she said.

The East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project involves a railway line linking Port Klang on the West Coast with the states on the East Coast, namely Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan.

This project is a joint venture between Malaysia Rail Link (MRLSB) and China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) and is supervised by the Ministry of Transport Malaysia.
