JERTEH, TERENGGANU, 25 September 2023 - The desire of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Tok Dor’s leaver, Nooraizah Mohd Safie, 19, to go to the university was fulfilled after almost forgoing the opportunity to continue studying thinking about the fate of her family that is unable to support her due to life difficulties and financial constraints.
She was offered to continue her study in Diploma of Manufacturing Engineering Technology programme at Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA) but almost gave up her dream because their family’s income only depends on her mother, Wan Kamariah Wan Ngah, 48 by tapping rubber after her father, Muhamad Safie Jusoh died of COVID-19.
Hailing from Kampung Anak Ikan, Jerteh, Terengganu, Nooraizah who is the third child of six siblings is the hope of the family.
Her two younger siblings are still in school.
Her eldest sister is a disabled person with hearing impairment while her 10-year-old youngest brother is also a disabled person due to Japanese encephalitis.
Her brother also did not continue his study and now works as a labourer in one of the oil palm plantations near her home.
Nooraizah said, the visit from UMPSA for assistance, the teachers who encouraged her and the condition of her mother sparked her enthusiasm to become a successful student and change the fate of her family.
Meanwhile, the UMPSA Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dato’ Ts. Dr. Yuserrie Zainuddin said, the university and Yayasan UMP are always concerned with assisting students with needs in easing their burden.
“After going over the needs of this student, Nooraziah will receive the B40 TVET Scholarship Assistance from the Ministry of Higher Education which will fund the entire cost of tuition fees and allowance assistance for the entire study period at UMPSA.
“She also has the opportunity to receive Early Education Incentive Assistance of RM1,000.00 in preparation before entering the university and Laptop Assistance to facilitate her study,” he said.
The university also appreciates the determination and encouragement of the Principal of SMK Tok Dor, Tengku Jailani Tengku Awang and the Counsellor Teacher, Norhayati Mohd Daud in an effort to help this student.
The Assistant Vice-Chancellor, Centre for Strategic & Quality Management, Professor Ts. Dr. Kamal Yusoh was present to deliver the offer letter of admission to UMPSA.
Also present were the General Manager of the Student Affairs and Alumni Department, Haryani Abdullah, Director of the Centre for Marketing and Academic Intake, Zainal Bahari, Head of Programme Diploma in Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Dr. Nurrina Rosli and Senior Manager, Academic and International Affairs Department, Hazmin Aris.
The story of Nooraizah went viral on social media due to the hardship of life because she had to decline offers to study at matriculation and diploma at UMPSA and received the attention of the university for assistance.
Meanwhile, concern with new students before the enrolment on 30 September 2023, UMPSA through the Student Affairs and Alumni Department (JHEPA) is also holding a final on-site verification to identify the Sulung Scholarship Recipients and going over the needs of students, especially from B40 families.
