UMP and DOSM empower Statistical Communication
PAYA Besar, 15 June 2022 - The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) in collaboration with the Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Universiti Malaysia Pahang (UMP) organised a Statistics Forum in conjunction with Program Jelajah DUN with Public Higher Education Institutions (IPTA) in Astaka Hall, UMP Gambang Campus recently.
The forum themed ‘Data Pemangkin Kesejahteraan Rakyat’ featured two great panels consisting of the Chief Statistician of the Malaysian Department of Statistics, Dato’ Sri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin and Professor Ts. Dr. Mohd Rashid Ab Hamid from the Centre for Mathematical Sciences (PSM), UMP.
The Dean of the UMP Diploma and Foundation Centre, Associate Professor Dr. Zakaria Roslinazairimah acted as moderator.
In his speech, Dato’ Sri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin said the forum aimed to present the main findings of the Malaysian Census 2020 at the Parliamentary and DUN levels in Pahang to plan national development to the micro level.
“At the same time, it can expand the promotion of the publication of the Malaysian Census 2020 data at the Parliamentary and DUN levels while increasing statistical literacy and empowering statistical communication especially to academics and students.
“Now DOSM has developed an open data platform known as KAWASANKU which contains information related to the demographic profile of the population based on the findings of the Malaysian Population and Housing Census 2020.
“KAWASANKU also provides various local social, economic and environmental indicators,” he said.
Meanwhile, Professor Ts. Dr. Mohd Rashid said that the data provided by DOSM is very important and can help researchers and research studies.
“The role of DOSM with strategic networking such as public universities is also instrumental in sharing expertise and adding value to data analysis outcomes.
“The data analysed will have an impact on an area based on the effects obtained and can even be used as data to improve the area.
“This forum can also bring the latest data science and artificial intelligence issues to students, staff and the public.
Assistant Vice-Chancellor, Industrial and Community Collaboration Division, Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Nurul Hazlina Noordin also thanked and was pleased with the collaboration in making this programme a success.
“This programme can also strengthen relationships and promote collaboration between academics and experts in various fields, especially statistics and data analytics.
“Through this programme, scholars can obtain authentic information in the form of knowledge and the latest research output from DOSM and IYRES.
“It also aligns with the UMP Strategic Plan 2021-2025 to promote technological capabilities among the community and generate the latest technologies through research initiatives,” she said.
There was also a presentation of the partnership findings from the Institute for Youth Research Malaysia (IYRES) regarding the Malaysian Youth Development Study which was delivered by the IYRES Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Vellapandian s/o Ponusamy.
Also present were the Director of the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) of Pahang, Khairolnizam Hassan and the Director of the UMP Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Dr. Noryanti Muhammad.
