UMPSA Professor Public Lecture Ceremony shares expertise in Future Industrial Catalyst Technologies and Sustainable Energy Storage Systems

GAMBANG, 5 December 2024 – The Academic and International Affairs Department (JHEAA), in collaboration with the Faculty of Industrial Sciences and Technology (FSTI), Universiti Malaysia Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah (UMPSA), organised a Professor Public Lecture Ceremony at Dewan Astaka, UMPSA Gambang Campus.

Today’s Professor Public Lecture featured Professor ChM. Dr Mohd Hasbi Ab Rahim with his lecture titled “Catalysis Technology: Facilitating the Current and Future Industrial Sector”.

Meanwhile, Professor ChM. Dr Chong Kwok Feng delivered his lecture titled “Sustainable Energy Storage Systems: Supercapacitors”.

According to the Dean of FSTI, Associate Professor Dr Aizi Nor Mazila Ramli, the Professor Public Lecture is a highly meaningful platform in academic institutions.

“It not only provides an opportunity for academics and the community to listen to valuable insights but also symbolises the excellence in knowledge and research spearheaded by the professors at FSTI.

“Today’s Professor Public Lecture features Professor ChM. Dr Mohd Hasbi Ab Rahim, an outstanding academic and researcher in the fields of catalysis and chemical reactions, advanced material development and formulation, and chemical substances.

“His expertise and excellence have also been recognised globally as he has been listed among the Top 2% of Scientists in the World, according to Stanford University’s report through the Elsevier/Scopus database,” she stated.

Furthermore, she mentioned that he achieved an extraordinary milestone by publishing in one of the most prestigious and internationally recognised journals, considered among the best in the world.

“In addition, Professor ChM. Dr Mohd Hasbi successfully secured a research grant funded by the European Commission.

“Meanwhile, Professor ChM. Dr Chong Kwok Feng is a renowned academic and researcher in the field of electrochemistry.

“He has published over 100 research articles in the Web of Science database, with more than 5,000 citations, reflecting the significant global impact of his research,” she said.

Besides his involvement in research, Professor ChM. Dr Chong Kwok Feng actively contributes to professional bodies, particularly the Malaysian Institute of Chemistry (IKM).

He is one of the founding members of the IKM Pahang Branch, established in 2019, demonstrating his dedication to empowering the field of chemistry locally.

“On an international level, Professor ChM. Dr Chong was elected as an Associate Member of Division I of IUPAC (Physical and Biophysical Chemistry) for the term 2022–2025, further solidifying his reputation as a respected scientist,” she added.

The ceremony saw the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ts. Dr Aida Mustapha, officiating the symbolic launch of the books “Catalysis Technology: Facilitating the Current and Future Industrial Sector” by Professor ChM. Dr Mohd Hasbi Ab Rahim and “Sustainable Energy Storage Systems: Supercapacitors” by Professor ChM. Dr Chong Kwok Feng.

Also in attendance were the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and International Affairs), Professor Ir. Ts. Dato’ Dr Ahmad Ziad Sulaiman; Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni), Professor Ir. Ts. Dr Mohamad Rusllim Mohamed; DUN Lepar Coordinator representing the Member of Parliament for Paya Besar, Muhammad Mustaqim Zakaria; Chairman of the Pahang Institute of Chemistry, Associate Professor ChM. Dr Awis Sukarni Mohmad Sabere; a lineup of faculty deans, heads of departments, and directors.

Nearly 350 people attended the public lecture, comprising university members and external guests, including students from Maktab Rendah Sains MARA (MRSM) Kuantan; students from Akademi Menara Gading (AMG) from two schools, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Gambang and SMK Padang Garuda; Kolej Poly-Tech MARA Kuantan; Pahang Matriculation College; and industry representatives.
