More than just academics

In the ongoing discourse about reforming our education system, one crucial aspect often overlooked is the promotion of a healthy work-life balance among academics. It's easy to overlook the multifaceted identities that define us beyond the confines of our professional identities: professors, researchers, scholars, and teachers. We are not just academics, we are so much more. We are husbands, wives, sons, daughters, parents, friends, siblings, neighbours, caregivers, and parts of other meaningful communities.

Tidak dinafikan tugas pendidik seperti cikgu dan pensyarah amat mencabar pada masa kini. Peri pentingnya pendidikan digalas oleh manusia kecil berjiwa besar seperti mereka, maka tidak hairanlah sesetengah konteks kajian menggunakan ‘guru’ bagi merujuk kepada cikgu, pensyarah, ustaz, ustazah dan pendidik-pendidik lain yang menyampaikan ilmu, memberdayakan intelek dan menginspirasikan kehidupan dengan landasan pengetahuan.

Barangkali kita pernah mendengar ungkapan ini agar kita berjaga-jaga dalam perlakuan, perbuatan dan perkataan. ‘Tersilap percaturan, sesal seumur hidup’ memberi bahawa jika tersilap pertimbangan dalam membuat keputusan, maka kesannya akan diterima sepanjang hayat. Walaupun perkataan ‘percaturan’ sinonim dengan kuasa dan politik, namun penggunaannya dalam makalah sastera yang mengaitkannya dengan kehidupan serta keputusan sering digunakan.
